That the island of
Lanzarote has escaped the high-rise buildings and
roadside hoardings that plague other tourist destinations is largely down
to one man, Cesar Manrique.
Artist, designer, sculptor and architect of
international standing, Manrique strove to ensure that local customs and
traditions were respected in all development on the island. His work
included the development of a number of extraordinary tourist attractions –

His legacy lives on, not just within his own projects and the attitude of
the island to development, but also in the fact that the island continues
to attract artists and makers from all over the world, drawn, as Manrique
was, to the island’s strange mysterious landscapes.
